There are some basic things you SHOULD and SHOULDN'T do in SEO. It's an ever-changing science but these things haven't changed in a while and are vitally important to your SEO.

Things your SHOULD do in SEO

  • Keywords in Anchor Text of Backlinks
You need to make sure that links back to your site contain your keywords and variations of your keywords as much as possible. It's no good having 1000s of backlink that just show your name or your URL, you want the search engines to know that your url is relevant to the keywords you want to rank for.

  • Backlink Diversity
Get your backlinks from various sources. Blogs, directories, new articles, social bookmark sites. It's no good having 10,000 directory backlinks. It looks unnatural to search engines.

  • Get Your Backlinks on Popular Pages
This speaks for itself. The more popualar the page your backlink appears on, the more worth it is to you and your SEO.

  • Use Your Keywords in the Title Tag
Ensure that your include your most important keywords in the title tag of your pages. Make sure its different for EVERY page too. Google hates duplicate titles.

  • Get Backlinks from Trustworthy Sources
If you're insure if you can trust a website, ie it looks a bit spammy and is full of dubious links and subject matter then its probably best to avoid linking to it or getting a link from it. Well trusted sites like the BBC etc provide must more weight since they are well trusted.

Things you SHOULD NOT do in SEO

  • Buying Links
It's ok to advertise but buying thousands of links from a link vendor is highly likely to get your penalised.

  • Frequent Downtime
Having your site down or inaccessable for long periods is likely to result in your being dropped from the search engines completely so it is to be avoided at all costs.

  • Hidden Text
Hiding keyword laden text in your site (same/similar color as the background, behind an image, too small to be read etc) is likely to get your site penalised. Search engine spiders have had many years to perfect tools to detect this so don't try it.
