These days you have look at the wider picture. What used to be called Search Engine Optimisation is now more accurately described as
Search Engine Marketing. Marketing is all about building your website as a product/brand.
Website Branding
Your site needs to have a consistant look and feel, look professional and imbue your customers with a sense of trust.
The website needs to then be visible to the outside world in every way possible. A few examples would be social bookmarking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. Cost per Click advertising such as Google Ads and banner advertising.
Some of these can be very expensive but the more methods you can use to attract visitors, traffic and sales the better your website will perform.
Content is Still King
It's an old
SEO expression to say 'Content is King' but it still holds true today.
Your site needs to contain interesting, useful and unique content to really succeed. Keep it fresh and updated regularly (at least once a week). Even if you're just giving a little new about your company it's far better to do this than leave your site inactive and dormant.
